World War Two Veterans MemorialThe Marion County World War II Memorial project was dedicated in a special ceremony Monday, Memorial Day, 2001.  The memorial includes the names of nearly 6,000 men from Marion County who served during WWII. The memorial is located in the Marion Cemetery.

Marion's monument is one of the largest WWII monuments built in the United States outside of Washington, D.C.  The finished monument features 8 foot high walls and 13-foot high centerpiece. and is located near the Sailors and Soldiers Memorial in the Marion Cemetery.

The Marion County WWII Memorial Association raised an estimated $400,000 for the project, which  honors county residents who served in the War. Stars have been placed on the names of 160 area veterans who died in action.   Back to Virtual Postcards
